British White Cattle Breed Information

History

BW breed is a very old one:

Some authors suggest British White Cattle were brought to the United Kingdom by the Romans about 55 B.C. One of the oldest herds of British White Cattle was the Sommerford herd. It was owned by Sir Walter Shakerly in Cheshire and established in 1725. In 1940, the British Government ordered the shipment of a group of these cattle to America to safeguard a precious national heritage if the United Kingdom was invaded. This was the only breed to be safe guarded in this manner.

British White Characteristics

The American British White cow is of moderate size, 1000 to 1500 pounds. Bulls are from 1800 to 2300 pounds. They are white with black or red points, the skin showing a dark pigmentation. They are smooth polled although an occasional "scur" is observed..

The cows have a good fertility with precocity of pregnancy, an excellent milking ability and a superior maternal instinct. They are easy calving even in heifers, delivering calves with low birth weight and showing a natural pneumonia resistance.

The BW cattle is "easy keeper", thriving in all kind of climate extremes and staying in good condition even in very poor pasture.

Our first experience in BW crossbreeding is with "Ozark CJ Fortune Hunter" the Paul Sims’ bull from Rolla MO. We have imported 1400 straws of semen with the help of 21st Century Genetics.

Above is a pic of this bull and following a pic of a BW hybrid calf born at Quebracho S.E.C.A.

We are thinking to go on our crossbreeding with BW cattle. At this time we are interested in a nice Bull from Tom Zimmerman, Des Moines, IA: "TR Komander 913F".
